Phil Clark, 71, a Hyde Park nature writer and photographer who focused on Latin America, died May 18.

Mr. Clark also worked as a journalist, public relations officer and tour guide.

His photographs have appeared in the Encyclopedia Britannica and a number of garden and nature magazines. He wrote two books, ”A Flower Lover`s Guide to Mexico” and ”Guide to Mexican Flora.” He led tours primarily to Mexico, Central America, South America, but also to Nepal, India, Britain, Nigeria, Cameroon and Kenya.

After graduating from the University of Minnesota with majors in journalism and botany, Mr. Clark began his career in 1945 as a science feature writer and labor reporter for a newspaper in Willmar, Minn.

From there, he went on to work at the San Antonio Express and The News, an English-language newspaper in Mexico City. He later worked as an editor of Horticulture magazine.

He subsequently served as public relations officer for the New York Botanical Garden. He later worked for the Field Museum of Natural History, also in public relations.

He is survived by a brother.

A memorial service will be held Saturday in Augustana Lutheran Church, 5500 S. Woodlawn Ave.
