Free-agent shortstop Alexei Ramirez has agreed to a one-year contract with the Padres. The deal is pending a physical.
Ramirez, 34, appears to be a stopgap solution for the Padres, who have top prospect Javier Guerra, recently acquired from the Boston Red Sox, waiting in the wings. The other favorite to address what has been a longtime weakness was free agent Ian Desmond, 30, who would have cost a larger contract, as well as the Padres’ second-highest draft selection.
Ramirez went from being a 2014 All-Star for the Chicago White Sox to hitting .249/.285/.357 with 10 home runs and 17 steals last season. After a poor start, his second half was more in line with his career norms, as he hit .277 with eight home runs and seven steals after the break.
Sources say Preller has long had interest in Ramirez, and the Padres scouted him heavily as early as April. Over eight seasons with the White Sox, Ramirez was a .273/.310/.399 hitter with 109 home runs and 135 steals. The Cuban native was an American League Silver Slugger in 2010 and 2014.
His defense deteriorated last season, but he still represents an immediate upgrade over the Padres’ incumbent shortstop, Alexi Amarista, who hit .204/.257/.287 in 2015. The Padres also used Clint Barmes, Will Middlebrooks and Jedd Gyorko, but according to FanGraphs, finished with minus-0.8 wins above replacement at the position.
The right-handed-hitting Ramirez was worth minus-0.5 WAR last season, but potential exists for a rebound season. He was a 3-WAR player in both 2013 and 2014. Ramirez has played in at least 154 games every season since 2010.
The White Sox declined a $10 million club option on Ramirez in November.
