The Weinstein Co. has dated “Big Eyes,” starring
and
, for a Christmas release in the U.S. — positioning it for an awards season push.
In the film, Adams portrays Margaret Keane and Waltz plays her husband Walter Keane, who was credited with revolutionizing popular art in the 1950s and 1960s with portraits of waif-like children with huge eyes. However, Margaret Keane was the actual painter, leading to the breakup of their marriage when the ruse was discovered.
Adams has been nominated for five Oscars, most recently for “American Hustle.” Waltz has won Oscars for “Django Unchained” and “Inglorious Basterds.”
“Big Eyes” is directed by Tim Burton from a script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. Danny Huston, Krysten Ritter, Jason Schwartzman, Terence Stamp and Jon Pulito also star.
This is the fifth title set to open this Christmas. The others are Paramount’s “Hot Tub Time Machine 2,” Sony’s untitled Cameron Crowe project, the Disney musical “Into the Woods” and Universal’s war drama “Unbroken,” which is directed by Angelina Jolie.
TWC has also dated Ned Benson’s “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby,” starring Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy for a Sept. 26 limited release.
The company also set Morten Tyldum’s drama “The Imitation Game” for Nov. 21. That film has Benedict Cumberbatch starring as Alan Turing, the genius British mathematician who led the charge to crack the German Enigma Code that helped the Allies win WWII. He was later prosecuted by the U.K. government for homosexual acts which the country deemed illegal.
