An 11-year-old Aurora boy died Thursday morning at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood after suffering smoke inhalation during a fire at his home, city officials said.

Aurora firefighters found Colton J. Cather under his mother’s bed, where he apparently was hiding during a fire in his house at 392 Colorado Ave., according to a police report.

He was taken to Mercy Center, then airlifted to Loyola. The boy’s mother, Ginger M. Smith, was treated in Mercy and released, the report states.

When firefighters arrived, flames were coming out of the bedroom window of the one-story house, Fire Marshal Kent Becker said. The mother had escaped, but firefighters had to mount a rescue operation to get the boy while fighting the fire, he said.
