In his column discussing the effects of the meltdown of the nuclear family, Stephen Chapman points to research suggesting that kids living in stable two-parent families are physically and emotionally healthier than those living with just one parent. Understandable.

The implication, though, is that a kid living with parents who under

”normal” circumstances would divorce, but who instead struggle through a dismally dysfunctional marriage, would also be better off than her/his single- parent counterpart, though Chapman doesn`t offer up research to support this implication.

He proceeds to suggest that divorces should be made more difficult to get-for the sake of the children. It might be safe to guess that the author has never had the experience of living with two adults who can`t stand being around each other.

Chapman`s references to the relative ”dangers” of being married vs. being single or divorced carried the most bitter irony though; it seems married people live longer.
