GUV GAINS: A Detroit Free Press poll published Sunday has Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm slightly ahead of Republican Dick DeVos, 49 to 41 percent, with 10 percent listed as “other/not sure.” A similar August poll had the race about even.

BARELY CIVIL: In Michigan’s other big race, Republican challenger Mike Bouchard, trailing in polls, accused Sen. Debbie Stabenow of flip-flopping on issues. “She says one thing here and does another thing in Washington,” Bouchard asserted during their first debate Sunday. Said Stabenow after the debate: “I didn’t see any ideas coming from my opponent. Just a lot of random attacks.”

BAN BOOSTER: Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a likely 2008 Republican presidential candidate, joined a “Liberty Sunday” rally to denounce gay marriage. Broadcast to churches nationally, the event was held in Massachusetts, the only state to legalize same-sex marriage. Eight states, including Wisconsin, will vote in November on constitutional amendments to ban it.

YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN: National Republicans are shifting campaign money away from Sen. Mike DeWine of Ohio to concentrate on races where they think their chances are better, The New York Times reports.

EYEFUL: Rick Magnuson, a candidate for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colo., says a sexually suggestive film he made of himself was performance art and should not disqualify him from the office. “If you look at it, it is probably G-rated,” he said Sunday. “A beer commercial is more explicit than this.”
