“Championship Ballroom Dancing 1997”: If you are a young man who came of age in the mid-1960s and beyond, the chances are your ballroom dancing technique can be defined by the phrase, “Hug her and turn around in circles.” If you are really advanced, a fast learner, or fresh from the punch bowl, you might attempt to do this in some approximation of the music’s rhythm. But generally speaking, the fact is you are destined to be embarrassed by old people at weddings. If you think Uncle Herb can really cut a rug, however, check out the contestants in this annual national championship, held this year at the Greater Columbus, Ohio, Convention Center and presented on tape (9 p.m., WTTW-Ch. 11). They move as if they’re on ice, albeit some in garments that could easily be worn by bridesmaids or valet parkers. Hosted by Barbara Eden, the event is dedicated to the late Juliet Prowse.
