A 26-year-old man died as a result of injuries suffered in a South Side traffic collision late Wednesday, authorities said.

Officers were called to the 8600 block of South Vincennes Avenue in Gresham about 11:25 p.m., according to preliminary information from Chicago police. Both the 59-year-old driver and the 26-year-old passenger of a 2007 black SUV were injured when the SUV struck a tree for an unknown reason, authorities said.

Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak LAwn, where the younger of the two men later was pronounced dead, police said. Upon arrival at the hospital, the 59-year-old declined additional medical attention, police said.
