The name may not yet ring a bell like the Titanic, but I am sure its passengers will always remember it.
When I heard it had been grounded off the coast of Italy, I immediately thought of another January event. On January 15, 2009, a U.S. Airways Airbus, piloted by Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger, crash-landed in the Hudson River after it collided with a flock of Canada geese. The crash came to be called the “Miracle on the Hudson”. No lives were lost, due to Sully’s quick thinking and skill.
He became an instant hero.
The Costa Concordia captain has not fared as well and will always have an asterisk beside his name because of how he handled the disaster.
There is a commercial on a local radio station for a retirement community that features an elderly couple talking about how wonderful life is where they reside. Near the end of the commercial the husband remarks how happy he is that they moved there and that “it’s like being on a cruise.”
In view of what happened to the Costa Concordia, I believe that whoever penned those lines might want to rethink that remark and change the wording of the commercial just a wee bit.
