Juan Espana scored two goals and his brother, Jorge, added one Monday to lead Tilden to a 3-0 Public League quarterfinal soccer victory over Juarez.

Goaltender Juan Escolto grabbed eight saves and earned his seventh shutout.

Tilden (16-0-1) will meet Roosevelt in a semifinal matchup Thursday.

Farragut 2, Curie 0-If Clemente Lima thinks his soccer team might be too confident, he has a good reason why.

”Last time we played them (Curie), we won 5-0,” said Lima, Farragut`s head coach. ”I was hoping we wouldn`t be too confident this time.”

Farragut`s confidence almost led to a Public League quarterfinal loss Monday. But thanks to two fourth-quarter goals by Miguel Villasenor, Farragut remained in the hunt for the league title by defeating Curie 2-0.

(15-7-2) moves to semifinal action Thursday, when it faces Amundsen at Hanson Stadium.

Amundsen 2, Clemente 1-Amundsen (14-1-1) rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two fourth-quarter goals, one by Martin Youkhana on a penalty kick and the game-winner by Carlos Ovando with 12 minutes left.

Amundsen coach Richard Straka was confident in his players. ”I knew we had a strong defense, so I took a chance and moved some defenders up (to score),” he said.

Hector Morales scored his 14th goal for Clemente. Amundsen advances to Thursday`s semifinals against Farragut.

Roosevelt 2, Schurz 1-Roosevelt advanced to the Public League semifinals when it beat Schurz on penalty kicks.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie before Roosevelt outshot Schurz 6-4 in the penalty-kick segment.

VOLLEYBALL

Woodlands Academy d. Willows Academy-Woodlands (13-8) won this nonconference match 7-15, 15-9, 15-12. Liz Morich (9 points, 5 aces), Megan Leonard (9 points, 3 aces) and Megan Kelley (9 points, 2 aces) stood out.

FIELD HOCKEY

Elgin Academy 3, New Trier 1-Elgin Academy (13-2) won behind two goals from Stacy Parthenis and one from Sharon Benkendorf in the Regional Pool B game of the state meet. Goalkeeper Beth Favale had five saves.

Deerfield 4, Francis Parker 0-Leading scorer Susie Ganbarg scored her ninth, 10th and 11th goals to help Deerfield (9-7) win Regional Pool C. Dory Kim had the other goal and Maureen Brantman posted four saves to earn her third shutout.

Homewood-Flossmoor 2, Antioch 0-Homewood-Flossmoor won Regional Pool D with goals from Heather Strock and Michelle Dooley. Antioch had no shots on goal, but its goalkeeper, Jenny Hagan, had to make 19 saves.
