The article ”Guns play an even bigger part in this year`s homicide epidemic” (Sept. 3) has me confused.

It said, ”Police and public officials tie the increase (in killings)

directly to the increased access to and sophistication of firearms.”

Increased access? The State of Illinois will not allow anyone to buy any type of firearms (or ammunition) without a background check performed by the Illinois State Police.

In 1982 the City of Chicago enacted a handgun registration ban thus stopping anyone that has not registered a handgun before 1982 from legally owning one. This year the City Council also passed an ordinance that bans semi-automatic firearms.

Maybe, just maybe, the National Rifle Association is correct when it says vigorous enforcement and tougher penalties for those who commit firearms crimes would be more effective.

Before the City Council passes another gun-control ordinance, it should repeal the one allowing its members to carry concealed firearms. Leadership by example is always more inspirational.
