Gael Garcia Bernal

is heading for the desert, starring in the Spanish-language film “Desierto” with “Gravity” co-writer Jonas Cuaron directing.

, Alex Garcia, Lucas Akoskin are producing the independent feature. Alfonso is the father of Jonas and teamed with him on the script for “Gravity” with the elder Cuaron directing Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in the outer space thriller.

Garcia Bernal is attached to play the lead role of “Moises” in “Desierto.” Production starts in October.

Jonas Cuaron and Mateo Garcia wrote the script, in which illegal immigrants crossing the border into the United States run for their lives from a drunk American citizen who has taken border patrol into his own hands. While they fight for their own lives, two immigrants learn to fight for each other and become close in the process.

Garcia Bernal was most recently seen in “No,” which received an Oscar nomination this year for Best Foreign Film. He’s repped by WME.
