Garry McCarthy was nominated to be Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and approved by the Chicago City Council on June 8, 2011. Prior to his Chicago appointment, McCarthy spent twenty-five years with the New York Police Department and five years as the head of the Newark Police Department. As Chicago Police Superintendent, McCarthy works to reduce violence and crime by using proven crime fighting and prevention strategies that helped reduce crime in both New York and Newark.
