Long Beach State pitcher Jered Weaver won the Golden Spikes Award as amateur baseball’s top player on Tuesday. Weaver, the brother of Los Angeles Dodgers starter Jeff Weaver, was taken 12th overall by the Anaheim Angels in last month’s draft.
The right-hander went 37-8 over three seasons with the 49ers.

Despite the All-Star game, things are tense down in Astros country. Despite trading for star outfielder Carlos Beltran, the team remains 10 1 1/42 games out of first place. Now comes word from ESPN’s Peter Gammons that Astros owner Drayton McLane and general manager Gerry Hunsicker will meet Wednesday to discuss the status of manager Jimy Williams and his coaching staff.
