Let’s see, now. Will Perdue talked about it often back when he was a Bull, and even Luc Longley alludes to it when he goes up against a marquee name like Patrick Ewing.

So Steve Fraser, the United States’ national Greco-Roman wrestling coach, is just carrying on a grand tradition when he lays out his lament. After all, his country has won only seven Olympic medals in this sport, four of them in the boycotted Games of 1984, and that is just the reason he feels his team is getting . . . well . . .

“The judges,” he says, “are not going to give us respect out there. That’s just the way it is. We haven’t won enough to get that kind of respect. I’m not making excuses or complaining. What we’ve got to do as a country is get to wrestling good enough to take it out of the officials’ hands.

“It’s an uphill battle, but we’re going to win it.”
