The family of the late personal assistant to White Sox and Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf has filed a $25 million medical malpractice suit in Cook County Circuit Court against Lutheran General Hospital and five doctors.

Sheri Berto, 40, bled to death Nov. 23 after normally routine surgery to remove a tumor in her uterus, according to the suit filed Monday by her husband, Graziano. The suit accuses the hospital and doctors of negligence for cutting a vein and then failing to adequately repair the laceration on Nov. 22. The woman suffered a heart attack and died the next day.

The suit names staff doctors Paul Goldman and Helayne Gail Merkin and residents John Patterson, Randy Morris and Patricia Chemers, all of whom were allegedly involved in either the surgery or post-operative care, as well as the University of Chicago Hospital and Clinic, which shared Patterson with Lutheran General.
