Houston 102, Texas 93-Byron Smith and Derrick Daniels scored 19 points each to lead a second-half surge by Houston in the Southwest Conference game in Austin. Houston (15-6, 6-3), the top rebounding team in the conference, trailed 53-47 at halftime, but controlled the boards on the strength of Darrell Mickens` 21 rebounds. Travis Mays, who missed one game with a hyperextended right index finger, led Texas (14-5, 7-2) with 25 points.

– Alabama 57, Florida 44-Melvin Cheatum scored 13 straight points in the first half to spark a 21-2 run that carried Alabama (15-5, 6-3) to the Southeastern Conference victory in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Florida (6-10, 2-7) was led by Hosie Grimsley with 13 points.

– Western Illinois 86, Valparaiso 60-Ron Ateman scored 20 points and Bob Smith added 18 for Western Illinois (14-5, 5-0) in the AMCU-8. Valparaiso

(3-15, 0-4) had 14 points each from John Becher and Terry Gipson.

– North Central 76, Carthage 65-North Central (15-4, 9-0) rallied from a 40-34 halftime deficit behind Alonzo Alexander, who scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half of the College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin game. Ty Nohlen led Carthage (7-11, 2-7) with 21.

– North Park 88, Wheaton 73-Danny James and Dan Hill had 13 points apiece for North Park (12-7, 7-3) in the CCIW game in Wheaton. Joel Groen, Barton Moseman and P.T. Hopkins each had 15 points for Wheaton (5-13, 1-8).

– Millikin 73, Aurora 62-Ron Martin scored 25 points for the seventh straight game for Millikin (10-7) in the nonconference game in Decatur. Aurora (13-7) was led by Julian Eison`s 19 points and 15 rebounds.

– Moraine Valley 74, Rock Valley 47-Willie Jackson`s 30 points led Moraine (17-4, 3-3) in the North Central Community College Conference. The losers fell to 15-7, 2-3.

– Waubonsee 73, Oakton 69-Larry Walters scored 23 points for visiting Waubonsee (18-5, 5-0) in the Skyway Conference game. Oakton (8-11, 2-3) was led by Steve Vrbancic, who also had 23.

– Triton 91, Harper 80-Charlie McLemore scored 20 points and Alonzo Verge 19 to lead the winners in an N4C game in River Grove. Harper`s George Dilles had 34.

– Du Page 93, Illinois Valley 86-Julius Burrell`s 19 points led the visitors (18-3, 4-1) to the N4C triumph. Troy Smith had 35 points for Illinois Valley (11-10, 2-3).

– Lake County 104, Morton 98-Visiting Lake County (9-12, 4-3), getting 38 points, including nine three-pointers, from Greg Green, scored the Skyway victory in Cicero. Morton (17-6, 3-3) got 30 points each from Earnest Mackey and Marvin McGrew.

– Truman 83, Elgin 60-Kenny Owens (17 points) and Cory Little (16) led visiting Truman (13-9, 5-1) to the easy Skyway Conference win. Phil Ostland led all scorers with 27 for Elgin (3-13, 0-5).

– Kishwaukee 81, Illinois Central 67-David Griffith`s 24 points led Kishwaukee (16-7, 5-1) in the Arrowhead Conference. Illinois Central is 3-16, 1-4.

– Beloit 57, Lawrence 52-Beloit, playing at home, made 10 of 12 free throws in the last 1:26 for the Midwest Conference North win. Beloit (11-5, 4-2) was led by Ken Muth had 15 and Mike Miller 12.
