Republican governor candidate Bill Brady today alleged that the state’s prison agency moved to downgrade the security classification of inmates to help show that the largely unused maximum-security prison in Thomson wasn’t needed and could be sold to the federal government.

But a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Corrections said the claims made by Brady, a state senator from Bloomington, were “inaccurate and without merit” and that “no such classification is underway other than routine classification of inmates.”
