Korean-born Chong Lim knew exactly what he wanted to do after graduating from the University of Illinois in Chicago.

“It was his dream to be a state trooper,” said family counselor James Lee, who had known Trooper Lim for several years.

Trooper Lim, 29, was a five-year veteran of the Illinois State Patrol. He was fatally injured Monday night when a car struck the rear of his parked squad car after he had made a traffic stop of another motorist.

He began his career as a trooper with the Chicago District of the State Patrol, and was transferred about a month ago to District 15 in Oak Brook, nearer his home in Hoffman Estates.

Survivors include his wife, Jee Youn.

State police officials estimate that as many as 300 squad cars will form a funeral procession escort when services are held for Trooper Lim on Thursday.

The funeral procession will leave Drake & Son Funeral Home, 5303 N. Western Ave., Chicago, at 8 a.m. for St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1275 N. Arlington Heights Road, Itasca, where mass will be said at 9:30 a.m.

Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery, 700 N. River Rd., Des Plaines.
