This is to commend Dorothy O. Peceny for expressing so well the decline of literary excellence.

It is indeed a sad reflection on the educational standards of our country when even its leaders stoop to almost gutter slang to ”get their message across” to the people. What incentive do our young people have to improve their vocabularies and spoken and written skills when the most effective communication appears to be of the lowest, most illiterate type?

I`m sure the points made by Ms. Peceny are of concern to many teachers, parents and, yes, even grandparents, who see the younger generation growing up, ever more sloppy in speech and habits, and wonder how long this condition can continue. It recalls to my mind the advice of a wise English teacher many years ago, cautioning us against slovenly habits: ”Humans are between the angels and the animals; why not try to step up, instead of down?”
