All over the United States people are asking what can be done to help students and make them better prepared for the future. My answer is: laptops. My plan is that each student in high school be given a laptop computer with programs for subjects like mathematics, sciences, English and Social Studies.

Some would say that giving every student a laptop would cost too much; others would say that books are much better and easier for students to use.

But these people forget major points. One is that when you trim out the cost of buying new books, more pencils, book covers, etc., the price of a laptop seems a bit more reasonable. Another is that, unlike books, programs can be upgraded when new information is available or if the curriculum changes.

Also laptops are very user-friendly, making it possible for students to get more work done in less time.

All laptops have calculator programs, which would eliminate the need of buying new calculators if the curriculum changed. Also it is helpful to those of us with poor handwriting, as typing would soon replace the written word. Paper would even be needed less because it would eventually be possible to just e-mail the teacher the homework.

Laptops are the wave of the future, and I suggest that Illinois schools take this chance.
