Jimmy Fallon may have made a splash on “Saturday Night Live,” but can he fill Conan O’Brien’s shoes?

According to Broadcasting and Cable, a television industry magazine, Fallon is the favorite to replace O’Brien as host of “Late Night” when O’Brien takes over Jay Leno’s spot on “The Tonight Show” in 2009.

“I think [Fallon would] be terrific, and he is at the top of our short list,” NBC late-night chief Rick Ludwin told Broadcasting and Cable. NBC doesn’t expect to make a formal announcement until next year.

Fallon anchored Weekend Update on “SNL” and served as a guest host on “The Late Show with David Letterman” in 2003, but he also was involved in travesties like “Taxi,” with Queen Latifah.

“SNL” alum Tina Fey told the magazine that she thinks Fallon, who “loves to talk to people,” is “really well suited” for the hosting job.
