Libreria Giron in Pilsen is one of three family-owned Giron bookstores in Chicago that specialize exclusively in Spanish-language books. Popular titles range from celebrity authors, such as Ricky Martin (“Yo”), to self-help, political books, best-selling novels and, according to store owner Juan Giron, a DePaul University grad who grew up in Pilsen, anything else that lets you breathe in the air of the Spanish language. “Pilsen has become an arts center for the Latino community, and a bookstore is essential for people to have a meeting of the minds,” he said. Both the 18th Street store and the two other stores — at Cermak and California Avenue, and 26th Street and Central Park Avenue — are admittedly “no frills.” His family bookstore, Giron said, “is representative of the value of the community, of progress.”
