Downs had already established herself as a leading light in the alternative music field before her cameo in “Frida” (2002). Now comes “One Blood/Una Sangre,” which not only finds her at the peak of her creative powers but also considerably more comfortable with her transnational, border-busting identity. Scottish-American and Indo-Mexican, Downs seemed considerably angrier and more confrontational in her prior recordings. But “One Blood/Una Sangre,” though still providing distinctly different readings to the title song in their English and Spanish versions, is more inclusive, more forgiving and more joyful. Fusing rancheras, a cornucopia of cumbia and a dash of Middle Eastern beats with a charged-up dose of blues, gospel and reggae, this collection of mostly original songs is simply sublime.
