Machine Head

The More Things Change . . . (Roadrunner) (star) (star) 1/2

While more of today’s metal acts don industrial and hip-hop fashions, Machine Head continues to pound its wrecking ball of thrash heavily charged with hardcore punk. The Oakland quartet’s aggression, so indelible in their 1994 debut “Burn My Eyes,” gets punchier in this sophomore release. But beyond Robb Flynn’s haunting caterwauls in the slower, more sullen brooders “Violate” and “Blood of the Zodiac,” Machine Head churns out the typical guitar sludge that has made them one of the ruling titans of the post-death metal era.
