As a rookie, safety Thomas intercepted nine passes, leading the NFL. His performance was reminiscent of the Bears’ Mark Carrier as a rookie in 1990, when Carrier topped the league with 10 interceptions.

Anchoring a young secondary, Thomas must continue to play at a high level if the Vikings have any chance to quickly recover from the loss of defensive coordinator Tony Dungy, middle linebacker Jack Del Rio and the training-camp injury to leading tackler Ed McDaniel.

Carrier has intercepted only eight passes in the five seasons since his rookie year, a statistic familiar to Thomas.

“I certainly don’t want to come in and get no interceptions,” Thomas said. “I may not make as many with guys looking for me. But I have a lot more confidence this year. I was inexperienced and it hurt at times.”
