“MLS Cup ’01” — Sunday, October 21 (ABC, 11:30 a.m.): While baseball comes closer to its championship and hockey begins its new season, Major League Soccer decides its champion today. The league’s top two teams compete at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, to see who brings home the Alan I. Rothenberg Trophy. Last year, the Kansas City Wizards captured their first trophy with a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire.

“Biography Up-Close” — Monday, October 22 (ARTS, 7 p.m.): This special examines what happens to the former stars of sport as they make the adjustment from stardom to life outside the spotlight. Those profiled include two-sport player Bo Jackson, hockey’s Wayne Gretzky, basketball’s Art Heyman, and tennis’s Zina Garrison.

“Breeders’ Cup Championship” — Saturday, October 27 (NBC, 1 p.m.): From the last step of the Triple Crown, Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., comes the last big stakes races of the thoroughbred season. Eight races covering eight divisions and totaling $13 million help determine this year’s top horses. Among the points leaders are Albert the Great, Flute, City Zip and Voodoo Dancer.
