Andy Moog stopped 19 shots for his second shutout of the season as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 1-0 on Saturday night.

Scott Thornton scored in the first period as the Canadiens ended a six-game road losing streak. Moog got his 27th career shutout and the Canadiens improved to 18-0-2 when leading after two periods.

The Penguins have been shut out on home ice three times this season, the first time that has happened since 1976-77. Moog had the first with 26 saves on Oct. 8 and New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur registered the other shutout on Dec. 4.

Pittsburgh lost right wing Jaromir Jagr in the first period when he aggravated a groin injury that has bothered him the last two seasons. Jagr left the game late in the period, after taking just four shifts.

Red Wings 8, Maple Leafs 1: Kirk Maltby had the first three-goal game of his NHL career, leading visiting Detroit to its second victory in as many nights over Toronto.

Brendan Shanahan, Martin Lapointe, Steve Yzerman, Anders Eriksson and Slava Kozlov also scored for the Red Wings, who won their fifth consecutive game. They’d beaten Toronto 4-1 Friday night in Detroit.

Toronto led 1-0 after one period on a goal by Fredrik Modin, but Detroit scored three times early in the second period and pulled away from the Leafs. Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood would not be beaten again.

Avalanche 5, Oilers 1: Visiting Colorado extended its unbeaten streak over Edmonton to 12 games. Colorado, unbeaten in its last six, has not lost to Edmonton since Dec. 7, 1995, going 11-0-1 in that span.

Valeri Kamensky, Eric Lacroix, Alexei Gusarov, Peter Forsberg and Jeff Odgers scored for the Avalanche.

Senators 3, Capitals 0: Ron Tugnutt made 31 saves for his second shutout of the season and beat host Washington for the sixth straight time.

Tugnutt, a former Capital farmhand, beat Washington four times last year, allowing just three goals. He also beat the Capitals 3-1 on Nov. 27.

Hurricanes 4, Sabres 1: Defenseman Steve Chiasson scored his third goal in four games as host Carolina took advantage of Dominik Hasek’s absence.

Chiasson scored his sixth goal of the season on Carolina’s first shot, coming on a power play just 4:23 in.

The Hurricanes then scored three goals in the second period against Buffalo backup goalie Steve Shields. Hasek had started 18 consecutive games and recorded five shutouts in December before getting the night off.

Panthers 6, Islanders 2: Radek Dvorak’s two goals triggered a five-goal outburst in the second period that carried visiting Florida.

Tom Fitzgerald scored one of his two goals in the period, and Steve Washburn and Ray Sheppard also scored for Florida. John Vanbiesbrouck stopped 20 shots for the Panthers.

Bruins 3, Lightning 1: Steve Heinze scored twice and backup goaltender Rob Tallas stopped 24 shots as visiting Boston ended a four-game winless skid.

Center Dimitri Khristich contributed three assists, helping the Bruins snap Tampa Bay’s franchise-tying, eight-game home undefeated streak. That gave Khristich eight points–four goals and four assists–in the last four games.

Blues 5, Mighty Ducks 5: Jim Campbell scored with 4:18 remaining in regulation to give host St. Louis the tie.

Brett Hull, the Blues’ leading scorer, left the game with a broken finger on his left hand after scoring two first-period goals. Hull, an eight-time All-Star and the 16th leading goal-scorer in history, was injured late in the period. He sat out the remainder of the game and his status was not immediately known.

Canucks 3, Stars 3: Brian Noonan’s goal with 10:06 to play completed visiting Vancouver’s rally from a three-goal deficit.

Canucks goalie Arturs Irbe made three tough saves in overtime to preserve the tie.
