Comic strips have been viewed as beneath the dignity of The New York Times, but they apparently fit quite nicely into The New York Times Co.’s new-media ventures.

Times Service announced plans Monday for an illustrated weekly serial drama called “Parallel Lives” that will appear in the next three months for subscribers of the America Online computer service.

The on-line comic strips will be sponsored by Nabisco and will offer three episodic stories “reminiscent of the newspaper and magazine series of earlier days,” Times Co. said in a news release.

The episodes will “end with cliffhangers” and will enable on-line readers to offer feedback, including story ideas. The strips will be accompanied by ads for such Nabisco products as Milk-Bone pet snacks and Cream of Wheat.
