Bordered on five sides by a wood deck with an open railing, this view-oriented octagon (Plan 1009-1A-ILC) offers all the comforts desired in a retirement retreat or a vacation house.

There are two large bedrooms and a spacious great room on the 1,564-square-foot main floor, and if more room is needed, a daylight basement will add two bedrooms, a full bath, a recreation room and lots of storage space.

From the detached garage, which may be rotated for optional entrance, a walk leads to the raised deck and the covered entry.

Vertical cedar siding and a central clerestory-window cupola add height and curb appeal to the house.

The clerestories and four motorized skylights, over the hall, kitchen and great room, flood the interior with natural light. Four sliding glass doors in the great room lead to the deck and enhance the view, and the deck also is accessible from the master bedroom and the laundry room.

A wood stove on a masonry hearth in the great room will heat the house on chilly days, although there also is a conventional heating system.

The master bedroom has wide wall closets with mirrored doors and a large bathroom brightened by the clerestories. The bath has twin lavatories, a spa tub and separate glass-enclosed shower. The second bedroom has a double closet and is adjacent to the full hall bathroom.

An angled counter along the L-shaped kitchen offers seating for informal meals and the kitchen is convenient to doors leading out to the deck, for alfresco dining.

An open stairway replaces a storage and furnace closet for access to the daylight basement (Plan 1009-1D-ILC), and is lighted by the clerestory windows.
