You are aware, no doubt, that the unpleasantness in Southern California roared ahead unchecked last week with no person of wit and wisdom able to predict when or how it will all end.

We refer, of course, to the financial debacle that bankrupted rich Orange County. Digging through the ruins brought on by the wrong-way investment strategy and hubris of the now-resigned county treasurer, investigators uncovered a more understandable human story.

All 17 employees of the Orange County treasurer’s office were placed on administrative leave Friday after auditors found questionable accounting practices.
