Just three days after nobody showed up Monday at Christ Church of Oak Brook to pick up available food for a food drive that was a joint effort of the village and the church, the news was quite different.
The food drive to benefit employees of Oakbrook Center restaurants initially was the idea of Oak Brook Village Board member Moin Saiyed, who teamed up with the church, which provided a location and workers.
More than 84 grocery bags of non-perishable food was collected Saturday via drive-up donations, and restaurant managers were contacted directly and asked to let their employees know about the food drive after nobody came to get food Monday.
“It was great, we got a pretty decent response,” Greg Scott, head of operations at Christ Church of Oak Brook, said Friday, a day after the successful second attempt. “I was pleased that we had 13 cars come by and gave out about 40 bags of food.”
Scott said an additional 10 bags of food will be given out Tuesday for distribution to some single moms who work at Maggiano’s, some will go to a couple of the church’s men’s groups who have lost their jobs and any remaining food will be taken to the Hinsdale food pantry.
