A rap artist and two associates were taken off a United Airlines flight Sunday and charged with simple assault for allegedly causing a disturbance after a flight attendant accused them of refusing to turn off their radios.

Clayton Gavin, a member of the group Dead Prez, Harris DeJesus and Umi Bem Niilampti were scheduled to leave on a United Airlines flight for New York City.

Police said the men “caused a disturbance” when a flight attendant asked them to turn off their personal listening devices, and they refused. They then “confronted her” and she feared for her safety, Chicago Police spokesman Hector Alfaro said.

Gavin, 30, of Crawfordsville, Fla.; DeJesus, 27, of New York City; and Niilampti, 26, of Cordova, S.C., are scheduled to be in court May 5, Alfaro said.

The plane left about an hour and half late at 3:16 p.m., the airline spokesman said.
