Boston scored in the fifth on Reggie Jefferson’s leadoff single, Mike Greenwell’s double and a sacrifice fly by Tim Naehring to the wall in left field.
Wakefield went 8-1 for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992, but was 5-15 in the minors last year. He worked with former knuckleballers Phil and Joe Niekro after being signed by the Red Sox in late April.
