Zimbabwe’s government said Wednesday that it will try to block the early release of three professed missionaries from the U.S. jailed on weapons charges.

The three men were sentenced Monday to 1-year prison terms for illegal possession of various arms and attempting to smuggle the guns onto an airplane.

“The leniency of the sentences constitutes a betrayal of all civilized and acceptable notions of justice . . .,” said Atty. Gen. Patrick Chinamasa, who plans to appeal the terms.

The judge ruled that the three men, from Harvestfield Ministries in Indianapolis, were tortured, beaten and subjected to inhumane treatment after being arrested for trying to load disassembled weapons in their baggage aboard a Swissair flight March 7.

Citing “special circumstances,” he rejected life sentences and issued 1-year terms, allowing the three to go free in November due to time served and time off for good conduct.
