A 17-year-old boy was killed in a rifle shooting Monday morning in the Little Village neighborhood, authorities said.

About 10:15 a.m., the teen and a female friend were walking north on the east side of the street in the 2700 block of South Drake Avenue when they heard gunshots, police said.

The two dropped to the ground, but the boy was shot in the head and died at the scene, police said.

The female, who wasn’t injured, told police she saw a small white vehicle drive away right after they heard the shots, but she didn’t see the driver or know which way the car went, police said.

It was believed someone fired a rifle from the driver’s side of the vehicle, according to preliminary police information. Police were looking for a vehicle believed to be a white Chevrolet Cruze, according to the information.

The boy’s identity had not been released by late afternoon Monday, but a law enforcement source said he lived in the area. He was believed to be a Chicago Public Schools high school student, according to preliminary police information.

Police found more than a half-dozen high-caliber rifle shell casings near the scene, according to the source.
