Milutin C. “Milt” Djordjevich, 78, an immigrant who was active in the Serbian-American community, died Saturday in his Libertyville home.
Mr. Djordjevich was born Nov. 15, 1919, in Yugoslavia and came to the United States in 1945 after serving as an interpreter for the U.S. Army at the conclusion of World War II. He spent several years during the war in a German prisoner-of-war camp. Upon his release, Mr. Djordjevich worked for the U.S. Army because he was fluent in seven languages.
He worked for the First Lake County National Bank in Libertyville as vice president and auditor.
Mr. Djordjevich served for 12 years as financial secretary for the Serbian Orthodox Diocese for the U.S. And Canada. He was a member of the Most Holy Mother of God Serbian Orthodox Church in Third Lake and president of the Bishop Dionisije fund since 1954.
He was an executive board member of Serbian Brothers Help and Vice President of Serbian National Defense of America.
“He was always helping people who came to this country, because of his languages,” his wife, Olga “Elaine” Djordjevich, said. “He’d go to job interviews, to apply for citizenship, just anything they needed.”
Mr. Djordjevich also was a prominent Lake County Republican, and he was a member of the Republican National Committee. He served as trustee and president of the Village of Libertyville Police Pension Fund.
He is also survived by two sons, Milan and Chedo “Charles”. Prayers will be said at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, 120 W. Park Ave., Libertyville, followed by a 10 a.m. service in The Most Holy Mother of God Church, Grand Avenue and U.S. Highway 45, Third Lake.
