This video teaser for the newest video game from Lucasarts, “Star Wars:1313“, sure does impress doesn’t it? The CGI is on on par with some of the top Hollywood blockbusters; it’s atmospheric, evoking some really gritty environs; and even feels like it’s channeling “Prometheus” in some instances.

But you see, to me that’s where I have a problem. Even though it’s supposed to be a game that takes place in that “galaxy far, far away” it just doesn’t feel like Star Wars. In fact, if you never told me what the game was called, or if you removed the reference to Coruscant – the ‘city planet’ that was introduced in the Star Wars prequels – you would think it was just another sci-fi RPG.

Now, I don’t want to dump bantha poodoo all over the game before I get a chance to play it. The folks over at Lucasarts have produced some pretty cool games exploring the unseen corners of the Star Wars Universe. Games like “The Old Republic” and “The Force Unleashed” have proven to be very popular, making many a Star Wars fan happy, so I will reserve judgement on “1313.”

But…

I’d like to know where are those games exploring Luke Skywalker‘s efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order? Yeah, we’ve had a series of novels and comic books that tell those stories, but I would LOVE to see Mark Hamill – who has been lending his voice to a whole slew of animated series and video games – reprising his most popular role in a series of “Jedi Academy” games! Come on, if you can get Bill Murray to do it in a Ghostbusters game, why not get Hamill for Star Wars?

What really rankles me is that Lucas insists that we’re never getting Episode Seven and the trilogy that most every Star Wars fan I know wants to see. Especially after seeing how the prequels came out, I think that exploring the post-Jedi era with these cinematic video games can help shut geeks like me up.

Okay, I won’t get angry. Anger leads to the Dark Side…

Anyway…all these pent-up frustrations aside, I’ll be looking forward to seeing how STAR WARS 1313 develops. I know that the folks at Lucasarts are big Star Wars geeks like myself, who have just as much passion as I do, so I know it could be a lot of fun!
