The “Air” finally is back in quarterback Steve McNair.

The man who became better known because of his ability to play through pain and win, now deserves the nickname he earned while setting passing records in college at Alcorn State.

McNair is the NFL’s top-rated passer at 107.8 and is coming off a career-high 421 yards in Sunday’s 38-17 victory over Houston. He also leads the league with 1,601 yards passing.

It’s quite a change for a team that reached the 2000 Super Bowl by handing Eddie George the ball at least 315 times in each of his first seven seasons.

“We’re winning,” George said. “That’s the beautiful thing about it. We’re going to ride [No.] 9 all the way to it.”

George noted that if not for a handful of drops Sunday, including a dropped 35-yard TD pass, McNair would have had 500 yards.

The Titans (4-2) remain convinced that McNair has not received his due. McNair has been voted to the Pro Bowl only once in his eight seasons–as an alternate.

“He’s my MVP,” Fisher said. “But I don’t know who all watches him play. We’re just that team right down here that plays games and wins occasionally.”

Helping McNair is his best receiving corps yet.

“Now we can stretch the football down the field and be successful. It’s good,” McNair said.
