Twenty years ago, a bar in New York`s Greenwich Village called the Stonewall was raided by police because its patrons were gay. When they lashed back, it kicked off three weeks of rioting-and the modern gay movement began. This year`s Pride Week will wind up on Sunday with the 20th annual Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade under the theme ”Stonewall 20: A Generation of Pride.” ”Instead of suffering passively, they (the Stonewall patrons) decided to fight back,” said parade coordinator Richard Pfeiffer. ”It broke the image of gays as sissies.” The march, which begins at 2 p.m., is expected to attract almost 100,000 people, including Mayor Daley. Right after the march, a rally and music fest will be held at 2600 N. Stockton Dr. in Lincoln Park. The gathering, which runs from about 4 to 6 p.m., includes rock bands and guest speakers.
