Christopher Reeve, best known for playing Superman, died Sunday of heart failure. He was 52. After a riding accident left him paralyzed from the neck down in 1995, Reeve became an advocate for spinal cord injury research. He fell into a coma Saturday after going into cardiac arrest at his New York home.

HOMECOMING? The U.S. may be able to reduce its troop levels in Iraq after the January elections if security improves and Iraqi government forces continue to expand and improve, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Sunday. The U.S. now has about 135,000 troops in Iraq.

HONORS COLLEGES PROBLEM?: Public universities around the country are rapidly developing honors colleges that advertise the cozy qualities of a liberal arts college within the walls of a university. The spread of such programs has led to questions about the expense showered on a few students and about whether some schools are rushing the programs out in response to competitive pressure.

‘AFRICAN TOWN’ DEBATE: Detroit’s planned “African Town” has stirred opposition, in part because the new business district would be established using taxpayer money that would be available only to black business owners. A majority on the City Council has endorsed its basic tenets, but the plan is unlikely to become a reality.

MATTHEW HITS LOUISIANA: Tropical Storm Matthew, the 13th named storm of the 2004 hurricane season, weakened Sunday after moving into southern Louisiana, causing scattered flooding.Up to 12 inches of rain flooded streets and homes in southeastern Louisiana, according to the National Weather Service.

INMATES ON THE RUN: Authorities searched Georgia on Sunday for four inmates who escaped from a medium-security prison Saturday in Mt. Vernon by cutting through a fence.
