It was with great interest that I read Joan Beck`s bitter denunciation of Shere Hite`s new book, ”Women and Love.” Beck accuses Hite of everything from promoting her book to bestseller status, as though this were not a common activity of all writers regardless of their sex, to changing the title of Hite`s work to reflect a pejorative view both of women and the contents, to accusing Hite of using a too-lengthy questionnaire.

The truth of the matter is that many women, and almost all men, are incapable of accepting any analysis, scientific or otherwise, of the relationship between men and women that reflects poorly on men. Poor men, indeed!

It is not difficult for me to believe that the results of Hite`s survey do reveal that ”overwhelming numbers of women really feel mistreated and used by men.” I do have great difficulty in believing that anyone should be surprised at these findings.
