Barrington — The Auxiliary of Good Shepherd Hospital is looking for volunteers to work in the Pear Tree Cafe and Pear Tree Gift Shop, both located in the main lobby at the hospital, 450 W. Illinois Highway 22. The gift shop sells many items, including flowers, cards, baby gifts and clothes for women and children. The cafe serves light lunches, snacks, coffee and soft drinks to visitors, patients and staff. Volunteers also are needed to participate in health fairs, seminars and educational sessions. Elgin — September is National Literacy Month, and the Literacy Connection will hold an orientation session for volunteer tutors at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Gail Borden Library, 200 S. Grove Ave. The training session for volunteers begins Sept.8, at which time the tutors are matched one-on-one with students for one or two hours per week. Maine Township — The Youth Drop-In Center, 9511 W. Harrison St., in unincorporated Des Plaines, is seeking adult volunteers to help the staff with a variety of programs. Volunteers assist with supervising sports activities, arts and crafts, study hour, the concession stand and registration. Volunteers also are needed as coaches, referees and scorekeepers for the upcoming floor hockey season. Games are held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Palatine — The Bridge Youth and Family Services Youth Advocacy Program needs adult volunteers to serve as role models for children ages 7 to 15 years old. Advocates are trained and supported by the staff to emphasize guidance, friendship and to help youth build relationships and social skills. A training session for Youth Advocates age 19 and older will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 14 at The Bridge, 721 S. Quentin Rd. Rolling Meadows — Take A Break Respite program, Clearbrook Center’s volunteer program that provides families with a disabled infant or toddler four hours respite relief per week, will hold a training session for volunteers from 6 to 10 p.m. beginning Sept. 28 at the Clearbrook Center, 3705 Pheasant Drive. Training includes communication techniques, feeding and positioning, CPR and first-aid. After certification, volunteers are matched with a family to provide respite care for a minimum of six months. Schaumburg — Volunteers are needed for Septemberfest Saturday through Monday on the grounds of the Municipal Center, 101 Schaumburg Ct. Four to five hour shifts are available mornings, afternoons and evenings. Volunteers receive a complimentary T-shirt and a Septemberfest grounds parking pass for the day they volunteer their time. Schaumburg Township — Spectrum Youth and Family Services is looking for participants for its Youth Employment Service.
