Exactly what has James Baker accomplished for the United States in the last 12 years? He has developed no new visions to guide the U.S. comparable to the broad initiatives of George C. Marshall, Dean Acheson and John Foster Dulles. Indeed, these are the men who developed the visionary policies that have resulted in the defeat of communism around the globe.

The U.S. has not yet responded with major new policies to guide the emergence of a new world order. Even President Carter was there first, bringing Israel and Arab states together-a process sharply curtailed by the shortsighted Reagan administration in which Baker was a major player. Perhaps we should look to the domestic front where, as secretary of the treasury, Baker had oversight of the collapse of the savings and loan industry.

Apparently Baker`s singular accomplishment has been to support Saddam Hussein and his Iraqi henchmen with aid and to send an ambassador who assured Saddam that the U.S. would not interfere in any border disputes between Arab nations-policies which led directly to the invasion of Kuwait and the Gulf War. Of course without the war, what would George Bush have to point to as solid accomplishments-surely, not the destruction of American prosperity and, as a result, the further disintegration of the American family? So I guess Baker is valuable to at least Bush.

Baker is the most incompetent person to hold high appointed office in the U.S. during the last 25 years. Everything he has touched has disintegrated into a disaster of mega-proportions for the U.S. I hope the American people have the wisdom to enable Baker to retire in five months.
