I read in your article ”U.of C. hit for lack of black law profs” that some law students at the University of Chicago are jumping on the minority-underrepresentation bandwagon.

The reason the U. of C. doesn`t have more tenured minority faculty may be the same reason the Chicago Bulls don`t have any Asian basketball players or more white players. You don`t expect the Bulls to lower their standards, so why should the university have to? These protesting students are copping out by not looking at the whole complex picture.

My husband goes to a less prestigious law school where many students attend in the evenings, juggling homework, their jobs and family life. Even though he is not a member of a minority group, he will be facing a big and growing form of discrimination-age discrimination. He will be graduating with honors (top 15 percent) and has good work experience, but no top law firm will allow him to get his foot in the door because of his age.

If these students are serious about making a change they can start by volunteering their time in recruiting potential minority students early in their college careers, and by tutoring them and helping them obtain financial aid.
