– EVENTS: Men-Rapid-fire pistol, free pistol, air pistol, running game target, smallbore rifle (three positions), smallbore rifle (prone position), air rifle; Women-Air rifle, small-bore rifle (three positions), sport pistol, air pistol; Mixed-trap, skeet.
– FORMAT: More than 440 shooters from 81 nations will compete at the world`s most sophisticated shooting range. In some events, shooters will be aiming at sheets of rubber with sensors that record the bullet`s impact. Television monitors behind each shooter will register where the target was hit. A scoreboard behind each shooter also will report his or her score and ranking against the field, updated every two minutes. The top six to eight competitors in preliminary shooting advance to a final round.
– MEDAL WATCH: U.S. shooters won 19 medals in World Cup competition last year and dominated the Pan Am Games with 54 medals and three world records. The shotgun squad took 12 medals at the world championships.
Matt Dryke was 1984 gold medalist in the shotgun. Bob Foth was runner-up in rifle at the 1991 World Cup.
The Unified Team should make a strong showing. Germany, Hungary, Romania and Czechoslovakia also should be strong.
China is traditionally strong in the pistol events, and the Italians are dominant in trap and skeet.
